The Gathering: Working together in times of crisis

We opened day one of SCVO’s The Gathering, alongside colleagues from the National Emergencies Trust and Merseyside Police. Being the first session of the event was a real privilege and an important opportunity to talk honestly about how organisations can work together when communities are facing the most difficult circumstances.

Sharing lessons from Merseyside

Our session, Collaborating in Crisis, reflected on two emergency responses in Merseyside during 2024 and 2025. We spoke about the tragic incident in Southport, where three young girls lost their lives, and the events following the Liverpool FC victory parade, when many people were injured or left traumatised.

We shared how strong partnerships and trusted local relationships helped us respond quickly, get financial support to people who needed it most, and think carefully about longer-term recovery for affected communities.

A space for learning and connection

It was encouraging to see such thoughtful engagement from the audience and to be part of a collaborative event that brings together voluntary organisations, funders and public services from across the UK, all of whom, as we’ve seen, are key when responding to emergencies.

Our thanks to SCVO and The Gathering team for inviting us to contribute and for hosting such a welcoming and well-run event.
