About the Fund

Jamie Carragher, Liverpool FC’s number 23 set up the 23 Foundation with the Community Foundation for Merseyside at the beginning of 2009 with the proceeds from his charitable Testimonial match and matched funds secured from the Government. The 23 Foundation seeks to provide the youth of Merseyside with the means to make a difference in society and achieve their full potential by giving them an outlet through sport and education.

Fund Criteria

Applications to the fund must meet the following criteria:

Individuals, aged up to 25 residing in the Merseyside area, who are looking to further their sporting career either through coaching and qualifications or via participating in sporting competitions.

Specific eligibility criteria

  • Priority will be given to individuals who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and live in Sefton.
  • Proof of residence will be required together with a letter of support from the relevant course provider or sporting team.

Sports coaching qualifications

Participation in major regional, national or international sporting events

Scholarships for placements with a University of Sporting Body

Documents which need to be included with your application:

  • Proof of residency (a copy of a utility bill/ driving licence or other similar document stating your home address will suffice)
  • A copy of a recent bank statement
  • Proof of age
  • Supporting letter from the course provider, coach or team.

If you have applied to us within the last 12 months and provided this information, we do not need you to send it again, although we may require a more recent bank statement.

Completed applications are considered by Community Foundation staff to check eligibility. You may be contacted for more information after applying and a decision-making panel will make recommendations based on the fund’s criteria and the budget available.
