Historic £25 Million Trust Transfer
A landmark transfer of £25 million from the Pilkington Charities Fund to the Community Foundation for Lancashire and Merseyside (CFLM) marks the largest single trust transfer in the history of the UK Community Foundations network.
This extraordinary transfer will enable more than £800,000 in annual funding for local charities and community groups in Merseyside.
The Pilkington Charities Fund, originally established as part of the philanthropic vision of the Pilkington glass family, will be revitalised under CFM’s expert stewardship. The Community Foundation brings a unique blend of local knowledge, community connections and robust governance, ensuring that the Pilkington legacy continues to best meet local needs.
From July 2025, the newly administered Pilkington Charities Fund will offer grants of up to £20,000, including support for core costs—a type of funding often difficult for smaller charities and community groups to access. Funding will prioritise organisations tackling poverty, ill health and hardship, particularly in St Helens, where the Pilkington legacy began.
The decision to transfer the Fund follows three years of careful consideration and due diligence by the Pilkington Charities Fund Trustees.
“This transfer allows the Fund to be managed with renewed vigour. The Community Foundation’s experience and connection to local communities will help ensure the Fund continues to meet its charitable purpose for generations to come.”
Neil Jones, Chair of the Pilkington Charities Fund
The Fund will remain permanently and predominantly ringfenced for charitable activity in Merseyside, with former Trustees continuing to have advisory input.
“We are honoured to steward this important legacy and are committed to maintaining its roots in St Helens and Merseyside. At a time of rising need, this funding—combined with our local knowledge—can help deliver lasting benefit where it matters most.”
Rae Brooke, CEO of the Community Foundation for Lancashire and Merseyside
