The Halton Foundation – Individuals
About the Fund
The Halton Foundation was launched in February 2016 and aims to forge links between local community groups who need help, with local businesses who may be able to provide it. The partnership is led by Halton Chamber of Commerce, Halton Borough Council and Halton and St Helen’s Voluntary and Community Action (VCA). The Halton Foundation’s grant making arm is administered by the Community Foundation for Merseyside. The Halton Foundation comprises a number of funds under its umbrella including dormant funds, the largest of which is the Knights House Charity, which was originally established in February 1875.
Fund Criteria
Individuals can apply for items, services or facilities to help reduce hardship and distress such as white goods and furniture – Please evidence a need for the request and demonstrate that funding is not available from elsewhere ie government funding.
The fund will also consider applications from young people under 25 living in the Widnes area who are in need of educational support, such as sports coaching fees, financial assistance to study music or other arts, equipment needed for further study or to assist with gaining employment or funding to travel abroad to pursue their education.
Specific criteria
Applications from individuals should be accompanied by a letter of support/reference from an appropriate organisation/individual such as Citizens Advice Bureau, local Councillor, local charity or community group. They should be aware of your situation and your need for the items requested.
Applicants for educational assistance need to provide a letter of support from the course provider, educational establishment or employer etc.
Please note that the fund will no longer consider applications from individuals who reside in Runcorn, as the funding for Runcorn-based residents has been exhausted.
Examples of the sorts of items that may be funded for individuals
Equipment such as white goods, furniture, bedding
Clothes/winter wear
Specific equipment to help with disabilities such as mobility aids
Course books for University study
Coaching courses
Equipment for educational course
Amount Available
The maximum grant available is £350. More may be awarded in exceptional circumstances.
Please note that the fund will no longer consider applications from individuals who reside in Runcorn, as the funding for Runcorn-based residents has been exhausted.

Documents which need to be included with your application:
- Proof of residency in Halton (a copy of a utility bill/ driving licence or other similar document stating your home address will suffice).
- A copy of a recent bank statement.
- Letter of support/reference.
If you have applied to us within the last 12 months and provided this information, we do not need you to send it again, although we may require a more recent bank statement.
Completed applications are considered by Community Foundation staff to check eligibility. You may be contacted for more information after applying and a decision-making panel will make recommendations based on the fund’s criteria and the budget available.
